Types of circular saws

Before we proceed any further, let’s have a quick overview of the different kinds of circular saws we’ll be looking into. Here goes...

Sidewinder circular saws

For this kind of circular saw, you’ll have the motor alongside the blade which makes it lighter. This way, it will be easier to maneuver it as you work as compared to most of the other kinds of circular saws. As far as the power is concerned, the torque is not that high and if you need to step things up a notch, a worm drive circular saw should do the trick.

Worm drive circular saws

In this, the motor is in line with the blade which results to you getting more torque which is even enough to work on wet lumber and even saw through concrete. Due to the high torque, this is the recommended type of circular saw for anyone who is into major renovation jobs.

Hypoid circular saws

The main thing that sets apart the hypoid from the worm drive circular saws is that in the former, the gears are conical shaped. With the motor being parallel to the blade, the power is directly transferred to the blade and as such, you get a lower RPM but an increased torque which makes these some of the best corded circular saws.

As much as this holds up quite well on the versatility, the downside to using these is that there is a slight weight increase. This could, however, be used as an advantage especially if you're working on lumber resting on a foot.

Cordless circular saws

Larger in size than both the worm drive and sidewinder circular saws, these kinds of saws are convenient for use when out in the field or during a power shortage. The downside is that you have to be really keen not to waste the power as their runtimes are limited and more so, the torque is less as compared to the corded variants.

Compact circular saws

The thing about heavy or rather full-sized circular saws is that they could weigh you down fast especially when the effort is not really worth it especially when doing some light woodwork. With such a lightweight circular saw, maneuverability will be easy and the performance dependable for most tasks.

How to shop for the best circular saw

As we already mentioned, it can be somewhat of a hassle to shop for the very best of circular saws, right? Well, once you’re done with this buying guide, you won’t have to worry about this anymore.

Blade left vs blade right circular saw

Considering these tools are quite handy when faced with different woodworking tasks, it’s important that you know which kind of blade works best for you since as superficial as this may seem to be, it is, as a matter of fact of utmost importance.

To better make your decision on which circular saw to settle with depending on which side the blade will be, simply consider which your dominant hand is.

In most cases, you’ll get the right blade saws where the blade is on the right-hand side of the saw. Regarding this arrangement, the blade is going to be pointed away from you which blocks your line of sight to some degree. In addition to this, your balance is compromised as well since most of the weight of the machine will be shifted to the edge. This kind would be best suited for the left-handed persons as they’ll be able to guide the saw better and see the blade as it cuts through the material underneath

As for the blade left variants, I’d recommend this to the right-handed persons since it will save them the hassle of guiding it with their left hand which would be the case if they’d have chosen the blade right circular saw.

Electric brakes

Incorporated to kill two birds with one stone, I'd say that this should be a must-have feature on any circular saw for it to be qualified as the best.

Electric brakes normally function to reverse the current in the saw and as such bring the saw to a halt in as little as 2 seconds. This normally happens when you release the trigger. When this functions as expected, you’ll be able to get utmost precision from your cuts and more so, it serves to prevent any kind of danger when your hands are positioned wrongly

Safety precautions

From my years of experience with these tools, it’s not really the best circular saw if it compromises on your safety. As much as most people may have the utmost confidence when handling these tools, it's important that you don't risk anything from something as simple of a tiny cut to as serious as a kickback.

The best way to prevent this would be to ensure that there are no residues at the side since this could result in the saw being pinched which would then result in injury.

In the event where your set up is pinched, invoking the electric brake would be the best way to go but then, this would only work when you have to release the trigger. So, since it’s better off to be safe than sorry, it would be a good idea to ensure you got all the essential safety attire. These include gloves, a face mask, eyeglasses, hearing protection and plenty more.

Laser guides: accuracy shouldn’t be compromised

Equally as important as safety, overlooking the accuracy while you use a circular saw might cost you the whole of your project since going off by only a few millimeters may have you start all over again.

In order to avoid such inconveniences and compromises that would otherwise cost you both your time and resources, I’d recommend that you consider getting a circular saw that’s inclusive of a laser guide.

Whereas you could go ahead and set up the cut prior to cutting the materials, a laser guide basically lets you know where the blade is going to fall. As convenient as they are, however, you should be really keen on the kind of saw you choose since some would be a little off on the accuracy.

There’s more...

Besides the laser guide, yet another feature that would greatly give you better accuracy is the inclusion of an LED work light. Now, where the laser guide isn't present on your saw, this, on the other hand, functions to illuminate the cutline hence making it significantly easy to see in low light conditions

The depth adjustments and cut depth

For the cleanest works, it’s recommended that you use circular saws in cutting 2x materials or even smaller than this.

For the blade depths, basically, ensure that the bottom-most tooth is able to get through the material by about ¼ or 1/8 of an inch. Bearing this in mind, the common 6 ½ and 7 ¼ saws should get through a 2” piece of timber at a 90-degree angle.

This, however, can get a little difficult for the bevel cuts (say at 45-degrees) since the larger 7 ¼- inch saws make it through comfortably whereas the smaller 6 ½-inch variants make the cuts really close. For the saws that bevel at an angle that’s more than 45 degrees, you’re not guaranteed that the cuts will be clean.

For the best results, I’d recommend that you go for a model that allows you to make the adjustments as fast as possible. This could be with the aid of a locking lever or one even get to do this one-handed whereas in some cases, you may have to put in a little more effort.

Depending on whether or not you’ll be making any bevel cuts, it’s best that you narrow down your search to a saw that’s going to make it as easy as possible for you to make such cuts.

A dust blower- always have a neat workspace

Any kind of woodwork will basically result in dust being present at your job site which can be quite annoying and frustrating when it comes to clean up, right? Well, as it turns out, this is even worse when it comes to using any kind of saw.

Not having a way to keep this in check would result in sawdust being scattered all over. As such, the best circular saw for woodworking I'd recommend you go for would be any that comes with a dust blower on it. this basically blows away dust from the area around your cuts since a lot of dust is normally collected way before you are through with the cutting.

As it turns out, when you’re depending on cutline markings or the LEDs to see where the blade will cut through, a dust blower will come in handy quite well.

Aluminum, steel or magnesium- which one’s better?

It’s important to pay attention to even the tiniest details which is why you should be really keen on the base plate shoes you’ll have on your circular saw. Here’s everything you need to know regarding these

If you are looking for a cheap circular saw, it’s best that you start off by looking at one with a steel base plate. As much as these are the cheapest, the downside is that they could easily bend if you happen to drop the saw.

Since this is, in most cases unavoidable and bound to happen, you should be really careful not to subject the saw to any form of impact. Any bends could highly compromise the accuracy of your cuts not to mention compromising on the overall longevity of the circular saw.

As compared to a steel base plate, aluminum is far much better. This is so because it’s thicker, softer and more resistant to damage as compared to steel. Not to forget the obvious fact that aluminum weighs less than steel, it will be much easier to manage the weight in your hand.

You’ll get either cast or pressed aluminum for the base plate in most cases and when it comes down to choosing between the two, I’d recommend that you go for the cast aluminum.

Due to the advantages that do have over the steel base plates, circular saws that have aluminum for the base plate are more expensive. As for the disadvantages, they could crack when mishandled.

Boasting to be the strongest and the lightest material one could get on a base plate, these basically determine the best circular saws out there. If you’re into getting just some basic woodwork done, you should probably reconsider getting this and settle for aluminum instead.

Similar to aluminum, the magnesium baseplates too are susceptible to cracks though it will take a lot for them to bend.
